Musk is mentioned in the Quran (Surah 83, Verse 26) as the substance with which are sealed the pure drinks of Paradise. For Muslims, the fact that the perfumed drinks of the Hereafter are sealed with musk indicates it to be the king of all the scents and, because God printed His Name on the seal, musk is the one of the purest and noblest of all earthly matters.

[83.22] Most surely the righteous shall be in bliss,
[83.23] On thrones, they shall gaze;
[83.24] You will recognize in their faces the brightness of bliss.
[83.25] They are made to quaff of a pure drink that is sealed (to others).
[83.26] The sealing of it is (with) musk; and for that let the aspirers aspire.

Musk is known to have been used in medicine and as a fragrance for over 5000 years and was praised by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. when describing Paradise:
– “…the water’s fragrance is better than musk”.
– “Then I was admitted into Paradise where I found small walls (made) of pearls and its earth was of musk.”

The heavenly river of Kauthar had mud smelled of musk. Imam Malik said no zakat was due on musk. The natural musk aroma exceeds most other similar-smelling animal and plant constituents in intensity, persistence and fixative properties. Musk was prized as a tonic for the heart and mind, for chronic headaches and as an aphrodisiac. It is also used in the Aryuveda, Tibetan and Unani systems of medicine.

Few people know that the musk aroma originates from a small member of the deer family (Moschidae), found in South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the eastern parts of Russia. Musk is so sought-after that it is one of the most expensive substances derived from any animal in the world.

As a perfume, the musk was used pure; rubbing a tiny piece in the beard or in the hair, but it was given to the privileged few, to use it in this way. Musk was also grinded up in essential oil of sandalwood, for at least a year (better if it was five years) and that is an excellent way to extract its aroma because these two scents are of a similar nature and they reinforce each other.

A Quranic and Prophetic remedy for aches and pains. Kasturi is used as a detoxifier and to improve vitality. Kasturi increases one’s energy level. Known to improve one’s fragrance after continued use. Kasturi is also a potent aphrodisiac.
